Every volunteer experience is a bit different. Here are some things you might do as a volunteer:
- Prayer: Always before we start our events, pray for the homeless and the volunteers
- Set Up: The assembly line will be set up, tables and chairs are set up, donations are organized, meals are prepared, and the order of the assembly line will be determined.
- Breakdown: Extra food is packaged and distributed, the area is cleaned, equipment is cleaned, announcements are made, and ended in prayer.
- Homeless interaction: Listening, engaging, expressing love, answering questions, offering resources, etc.
- Passing meals: Always ask what kind of meals they like, make sure the food is hot, never assume, ask what they’d like in the future, smile when we pass meals, and always ask how we can improve.
- Passing out clothes: Always ask what size they wear, compliment their style, and let them know how amazing they will look
- Music: Providing hope for the homeless by playing music that uplifts them
Your safety is a top priority. The McQueen Foundation follows all Centers for Disease Control and local guidelines for sanitation, hygiene, and social distancing to ensure our homeless friends and volunteers are safe. This may include masks, additional handwashing stations, gloves, reduced group sizes, and other safety precautions.
